Choose Istanbul Airport (IST) or Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) around your hotel and onward flight, rather than assuming one is always better. For a first visit based in Sultanahmet or Beyoğlu, compare the complete journey from both airports. For a stay around Kadıköy or Pendik, include SAW in your search. Most importantly, check that connecting flights use the same airport.
A cheaper flight can become the more expensive choice once you add checked baggage, a cross-city transfer and an extra hotel night. This guide helps you compare those costs before booking.
IST and SAW at a glance
| Decision | Istanbul Airport: IST | Sabiha Gökçen: SAW |
|---|---|---|
| Airport name on your ticket | Istanbul Airport | Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen International Airport |
| Hotel planning | Compare the route to your exact European-side or Asian-side address. | Located in Pendik/Kurtköy; include it when comparing Asian-side stays. |
| Public transport | Metro, airport buses and other road transfers are available. | M4 metro connects the airport with Kadıköy; road options are also available. |
| Connecting flight | Confirm that the next flight also says IST. | Confirm that the next flight also says SAW. |
| Best booking comparison | Flight + baggage + transfer + any overnight stay. | The same calculation, using the SAW transfer route. |
Transport links above are checked against Turkish Airlines’ Istanbul Airport information, SAW’s official transport guide and Metro İstanbul’s M4 line information. Check live service notices for your travel date.
Which airport is better for Sultanahmet or Taksim?
Start with the hotel address, then compare the arrival time and transfer route. “Istanbul city centre” is too broad: a hotel near the Blue Mosque and one near Taksim can require different final connections.
Neither airport should be treated as a short walk or a quick hop from the historic sights. With luggage, compare the number of changes, walking between stops and the final distance to the hotel. A rail journey may be useful during busy road traffic, but a service that requires several changes is a different experience from a door-to-door transfer.
For a late arrival, check whether your chosen service operates after you have cleared passport control and collected your bags. The landing time is not the time you will be ready at the pickup point.
Which airport works for Kadıköy and the Asian side?
SAW is in Pendik/Kurtköy, and the M4 links it with Kadıköy. That makes it a useful option to price for an Asian-side stay. It does not make every Asian-side hotel equally convenient: the final connection to your neighbourhood still matters.
If an IST flight has better timings or baggage conditions, compare the complete transfer before ruling it out. A family with several bags may prefer a different option from a solo traveller staying close to a metro station.
IST to SAW connections: the mistake to avoid
IST and SAW are separate airports. A change between them requires a journey across Istanbul; it is not an internal terminal transfer. Before buying a connection, open the detailed itinerary and compare the three-letter airport codes on every leg.
If your journey changes airports, ask the airline or ticket seller to confirm whether the connection is protected, whether you must collect and recheck luggage, and what happens if the first flight is delayed. Do this before paying, especially when the flights are on separate tickets.
There is no single connection time that works for every visitor. Passport control, baggage collection, traffic, the chosen transfer and the next airline’s check-in deadline all affect the calculation. A map’s driving estimate alone is not enough.
A simple flight-and-transfer cost comparison
Use this worksheet for each airport:
- Record the flight price with the baggage you actually need.
- Add the airport-to-hotel transfer for your whole party.
- Add any overnight stay caused by the flight schedule.
- Include a second transfer if your onward flight uses another airport.
- Compare arrival time and the first usable sightseeing day as well as money.
For example, if one airfare saves a family €80 but its required transfer and extra night cost €120 more, that option is €40 more expensive overall. These are illustrative numbers, not current fares.
Booking an Istanbul airport pickup
Send the airport code, flight number, arrival date, hotel address, passenger count and number of suitcases. If you need a child seat or help with a mobility aid, describe the requirement when requesting the vehicle; confirm it before booking.
Ask where to meet the driver, how flight delays are handled, how to contact the team after landing and whether the quote is per vehicle. Our Istanbul airport transfer page lists vehicle options and pickup information. Use the written quote for your own journey.
Connecting Istanbul with Cappadocia
If a Turkey tour starts with a domestic flight, match that departure airport to your arrival plan. Leave time for luggage, check-in and the handover between services. Read our Cappadocia airport guide before arranging the destination transfer too.
A morning arrival followed by a full sightseeing programme can also be tiring after a long international flight. Tell the planning team whether you want to travel onward immediately or spend your first night in Istanbul.
Frequently asked questions
Are Istanbul Airport and Sabiha Gökçen the same airport?
No. IST is Istanbul Airport; SAW is Sabiha Gökçen. Check the code rather than relying on the word “Istanbul”.
Is SAW always cheaper?
No. Compare the fare for your dates, baggage and complete transfer. There is no airport-wide price rule.
Can I use the same pickup details for IST and SAW?
No. Confirm the airport and meeting instructions in your booking. A pickup arranged for the wrong airport will not match your arrival.
Should I book the cheapest flight before arranging my tour?
Check the tour’s start point and domestic flight plan first. The lowest airfare may create an inconvenient connection.
