An Istanbul Airport layover can become a city visit only when your entry eligibility, transport plan and flight timetable all fit. The hours between flights are not all sightseeing hours. Start with your actual airport and your airline’s return requirements, then compare a city visit with staying at the terminal.

Can you leave Istanbul Airport during a layover?
First confirm whether you can enter Turkey with your citizenship, passport type and travel purpose. An onward ticket or tour reservation does not automatically provide permission to enter. Use our Turkey visa and entry guide and the official sources linked there.
Next, identify the airport on both tickets. A connection that changes between IST and SAW requires its own transport plan; it is not the same as a layover in one terminal. Check whether bags must be collected, whether tickets are separate and what check-in arrangements your next flight requires.
Touristanbul: the official airline service
Turkish Airlines describes Touristanbul as a complimentary city-tour service for eligible international-to-international passengers connecting at IST for 6–24 hours. Its FAQ also requires a Turkish Airlines ticket number beginning 235, the same reservation code for arrival and departure, and compatibility with tour times.
At our October 14, 2026 check, the official Touristanbul FAQ required registration at least 30 minutes before the tour start and at least 1 hour 25 minutes between the tour end and scheduled departure. These are that program’s conditions, not a universal timing rule for a self-arranged trip.
Confirm the current schedule and your booking directly with the airline. Do not send your booking code or ticket number through this calculator. The official FAQ says Touristanbul departs from and returns to IST, not SAW; entry requirements remain the passenger’s responsibility.

Airline stopover accommodation is a separate service with its own conditions. Do not assume a city tour and hotel can both be used during one connection; read the current airline terms. A private tour quote is also separate from airline benefits.

How to use the result
A three-hour result means only that the entered durations leave three hours. It does not account for an unexpected queue, a late inbound flight or a change to your onward service unless your allowances cover them. Recalculate when your actual arrival changes.

- Keep the correct airport, terminal and return meeting instructions available offline.
- Agree on a return deadline and what happens if the inbound flight is delayed.

Frequently asked questions
Is a six-hour layover enough to explore Istanbul independently?
There is no universal answer. Touristanbul’s published connection range is an eligibility condition for that service, not a recommendation that every six-hour connection suits a private city visit.
Does this calculator collect my location or booking?
No. It subtracts durations in your browser. It does not request your location, passport, reservation code or ticket details.
Can Tours to Turkey book the free airline tour for me?
Use Turkish Airlines’ official channels for Touristanbul. Our independent Istanbul tours are separate paid services with their own written arrangements.
