The best way to travel from Istanbul to Bursa depends on where you are staying, whether you are making a day trip and how you will continue after arriving. Compare the whole journey from your hotel to your first stop in Bursa, not just the time on a ferry or bus.
For independent travellers, the main choices are a passenger ferry followed by local transport, an intercity bus, or a private road transfer. An organised tour can combine transport and sightseeing, but check its route and inclusions before comparing prices.
Passenger ferry: Kabataş to Mudanya with BUDO
At our September 2026 check, BUDO’s official information identifies Kabataş as its Istanbul pier and Mudanya as the Bursa arrival point. It states that its Eminönü/Sirkeci pier closed when services moved to Kabataş on 1 January 2026. Use the pier shown on your ticket rather than an older blog or map pin.
BUDO lists a sailing time of approximately 1 hour 50 minutes. That is the boat journey, not the total hotel-to-hotel travel time. Add the trip to Kabataş, the required boarding time and onward transport from Mudanya. BUDO carries passengers rather than cars and says it does not provide a shuttle service from either pier. See the official BUDO FAQ.
Check the current BUDO timetable for both directions before paying. For a day trip, plan the return journey at the same time as the outward one. Sailing times and cancellations can change, including because of weather.
Getting from Mudanya to your Bursa stop
Arriving in Mudanya does not put you in Bursa’s historic centre. Decide in advance whether you will use local public transport, a taxi or an arranged transfer for this final leg. Ask your hotel or planner for the current connection to your actual destination.
Keep the return connection realistic. A full sightseeing day that finishes in the city needs time to get back to the ferry pier and complete boarding. Do not calculate your return around the ferry departure time alone.
Intercity bus: compare the exact terminals
A bus can be practical if its departure point is convenient for your accommodation. Istanbul has several departure areas, so “Istanbul to Bursa” is not enough information to compare two tickets. Check the exact boarding terminal, the arrival stop, the estimated journey time and luggage rules.
Kamil Koç/FlixBus lists an Istanbul Anadolu–Bursa route. Search your travel date and the appropriate Istanbul departure area to see available services. Allow for traffic and onward transport from the Bursa stop; do not treat an advertised minimum journey time as a guarantee.
Private transfer or organised day tour?
Choose a private transfer when you want transport between agreed pickup and drop-off points. A driver and vehicle do not automatically include a licensed guide, admission tickets or a sightseeing programme. Ask whether tolls, parking, waiting time and any stops are included in the written price.
Choose an organised day tour if you want transport and visits arranged together. Compare the actual sightseeing stops and the time allocated to each. If Uludağ, a cable-car ride or a shopping stop appears in the programme, ask whether it is optional and how it affects time in Bursa itself.
Neither option is automatically fastest: the pickup location, traffic, route and number of stops matter.
Is Bursa realistic as a day trip?
It can be, but build the day around a short list of priorities. A return journey takes a substantial part of the day. If you want an unhurried city visit plus additional excursions, compare an overnight stay with a day tour rather than assuming everything fits.
Avoid a tight connection to an international flight after returning to Istanbul. Leave a suitable buffer or put Bursa earlier in your itinerary, especially when your plan depends on a sea crossing.
